Nuclear South West is committed to open dialogue about the role of nuclear in the UK’s energy future. To support that, we are sharing independent research from SEC Newgate on public perceptions of nuclear energy.
The findings show that while public sentiment towards nuclear remains mixed, there are clear opportunities to build greater understanding and support. In particular, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) stand out as a technology with higher local acceptance compared to large‑scale stations.
The report also highlights strong positive associations with nuclear energy:
- Reliability and efficiency as a dependable low‑carbon source
- Job creation and long‑term investment that benefit communities for decades
- Energy independence, reducing reliance on imports and strengthening the UK’s resilience
For the South West, these insights reinforce the importance of continuing to communicate the benefits of innovation, skills, and investment that SMRs can bring to our region. With world‑class expertise, supply chain capability, and a track record of collaboration, the South West is well placed to lead in shaping the next chapter of nuclear.
Please note: this report reflects the views of SEC Newgate’s research respondents, not necessarily those of Nuclear South West.
