The Welding Test Centre: Bridgwater’s New Training Facility for Nuclear Skills and Certification
In January 2025, a new facility quietly opened its doors in Bridgwater and quickly became a cornerstone of nuclear readiness in the South West. The Welding Test Centre (WTC), a TÜV-approved facility was established to meet a growing need: high-quality, local access to welding training, testing, and certification for nuclear infrastructure projects.
Just eight miles from Hinkley Point C, WTC offers a full suite of services including Welding Procedure Qualification Records (WPQR), Welder Qualification Testing (WQT), and mechanical and non-destructive testing. Welders train and certify in a modern, professionally equipped environment, with fast-track options available to meet project timelines and deployment needs.
But the centre’s story is more than its services, it’s about collaboration, foresight, and filling a critical gap in the market. As WTC Director, Chris Escott explains:
“After a high influx of customer demand, a collaboration between AW Inspections and Berry & Escott emerged. From seeing the gap in the market, we set up a new testing centre to enable welders from across the Southwest to gain the necessary qualifications to be able to work on nuclear projects across the world”.
Since launch, WTC has trained and certified over 200 individuals, reinforcing the South West’s reputation for capability, responsiveness, and practical delivery. Surveillance is carried out in association with TÜV UK Limited.
The Welding Test Centre is more than a facility, it’s a strategic asset, helping to build the skilled workforce needed to deliver nuclear safely and effectively. It reflects the region’s commitment to quality, innovation, and joined-up thinking across businesses and projects.
