What's new in nuclear?

Hello

Nuclear holds the key to energy security

New Prime Minister Liz Truss set out three early priorities for her first months in office: the economy, energy, and the NHS. She pledged to ‘deal with energy bills and to secure our future energy supply’.

Just last Friday (23 September), the new Chancellor and previous Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Kwasi Kwarteng delivered his ‘mini-budget’ to the House. The Growth Plan sets out planning reform via a Planning and Infrastructure Bill.

As part of this, Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C are listed as projects which will be accelerated through the development process.

The UK Government working with LEPs, Local Authorities and others has already made significant investment in infrastructure to support nuclear energy in our region over many decades. We seek continued investment in local communities and infrastructure support as we move into a new era for nuclear. The Chancellor’s policy document flagged Hinkley and Sizewell as key projects to support its growth ambitions. We welcome the focus on policies to accelerate development and construction.

The South West has a strong track record of delivering green and reliable energy supply. Over 46 years, Hinkley Point B contributed approximately 3% of the UK’s energy needs producing 311TWh – enough to meet the needs of every home in the UK for almost three years. The key to energy security is nuclear: the only technology that is clean, reliable, and British.
