What's new in nuclear?

Hello

An eventful summer for the nuclear sector

Having attended this month’s DECOM and Supply Chain events in Telford, where we made many new connections, we now look forward to Nuclear Week in Parliament, where we are supporting a Nuclear Regions Event.  We look forward to joining with the other UK Nuclear Clusters to demonstrate the strength of expertise, capability and infrastructure that currently exists in the regions which will help to realise the ambitions of Great British Nuclear.

The South West also eagerly awaits news of our bid for the Fusion STEP Test Reactor at Severn Edge. The STEP site will ultimately be selected by the Secretary of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. To enable this decision UKAEA will make recommendations based on a set of key criteria, including the developability of the site, both technically and operationally, and the potential for socio-economic benefits in the selected community and a supportive community. We believe Severn Edge, Gloucestershire offers the ideal solution for nuclear fusion in the UK.

In other news, at the end of June, the International Energy Agency (IEA) released a positive report on nuclear power. Nuclear energy has the power and capacity to support a reduction in reliance on imported fossil fuels and to help reach net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050. The full report from the IEA is available to read online now. If you’re stuck for time, you can also read the executive summary. In showcasing the nuclear opportunities in the South West, we’ve created some highlight videos, which you can watch at the link below:

Rolls-Royce SMR shortlists 7 locations for first factory

The first of three factories for Rolls-Royce SMR’s small modular reactors will be in either Sunderland, Newton Aycliffe in County Durham, Richmond in North Yorkshire, Deeside in Wales, Ferrybridge in Yorkshire, Stallingborough in Lincolnshire or Carlisle in Cumbria, the consortium announced today (4 July).

We look forward to the announcement of both the successful bid and the second round of possible locations for Rolls-Royce. We are lucky to host an already nuclear popular region with plenty of opportunities to utilise an established, competent supply chain, and with skills-ready talent on our doorstep with state-of-the-art education facilities.

Sizewell C nuclear power station approved by the government

The UK government has given the go-ahead for the new Sizewell C nuclear power station to be built. The business secretary has approved the application for the development of the plant in Suffolk. Given that the first new nuclear build in a generation at HPC is well underway, and that the EPR at SZC is to be a replica of this, we look forward to transferring the South West’s knowledge and expertise with our colleagues in the East.

First waste removed from old nuclear Sellafield store

The first batch of waste has been safely removed from one of the most hazardous buildings on the Sellafield site, the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo.

Energy security bolstered by more nuclear generation, better performance: report

Nuclear generation bounced back from the pandemic-related decline seen in 2020, increasing by 100 TWh to reach 2653 TWh in 2021, according to World Nuclear Association's latest performance report which has just been published.
