What's new in nuclear?

Hello

Just eight weeks until DECOM 2022

We’re looking forward to attending and hosting meetings at this year’s DECOM2022 in Telford. Supported by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, DECOM2022 will attract delegates from across the sector to discuss topics including:

  • Developments of the sites in the UK and opportunities for the supply chain
  • Views on the global decommissioning market
  • And where UK companies have potential to win work and the best routes to secure these contracts.

With four of the 17 UK-based sites listed for decommissioning in the South West, there is no better time or location to invest in nuclear. These sites include Hinkley Point A in Somerset, Berkeley based on the banks of the River Severn and Winfrith in Dorset with decommissioning contracts collectively valued at £3.3 billion. Similarly, Oldbury is also expected to undergo a decommissioning programme estimated to be worth around £1.3 billion within the next seven years.

Stefan Cecchini, Vice-Chairman, Nuclear South West, said:

"The scale of contractual opportunities available in the South West is impressively wide, and we have an internationally-renowned body of experience and expertise available to support the UK’s decommissioning efforts.

Examples like the preparations for the Continuous Reactor Decommissioning model and contracts available via the older Magnox sites in decommissioning suggest that a readiness mindset is required.

This is an exciting time for the sector, which has a key part to play in the country’s transition to a clean energy future.”

Speakers at DECOM2022 will look at some of the key decommissioning projects in the UK, international repositories and lessons learned, whilst touching on cross industry engagement.

We’re excited to be present at the event, with a stand based at K1 at the event and welcome anyone looking for further information on opportunities in our region to get in touch before the event. News

Nuclear energy can be the turning point in the race to decarbonize

As a team of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts and I made our way to the UN’s COP26 climate conference in Glasgow last November, the growing energy crisis was already apparent in queues at petrol stations and among concerned conversations about the 400% rise in natural gas prices.

Net zero 2050 has put nuclear power at the heart of its strategy. Nuclear South West welcomes the UK government’s push on nuclear to support energy security, and we are poised to support Great British Nuclear to help bring new projects swiftly to the fore.
