What's new in nuclear?

Hello

Nuclear’s pivotal function for the future of UK energy

The nuclear industry has been in the headlines for all the right reasons this month, with the publication of the Government’s Energy Security Strategy. We are proud to work within a sector that is so well placed to support the UK’s ambitious net zero targets, and this new strategy underlines what a key role our sector can play in the drive towards a balanced and reliable energy grid for the UK.

The strategy sees a major emphasis on homegrown power for greater energy independence with a significant acceleration in nuclear generation and an ambition of up to 24GW by 2050. A new government body, Great British Nuclear, will be set up immediately to bring forward new projects.

Stefan Cecchini, Vice Chairman, Nuclear South West said: “We welcome today’s publication of the government’s Energy Security Strategy which details the government’s confidence in nuclear power as part of the UK’s future response to growing concerns around energy security.

“Our clear message to government is that we need to rapidly move from strategy to delivery. We stand ready to support a new wave of nuclear energy provision to support the government in its move towards a net zero secure energy future.”

The fact that the Prime Minister chose Hinkley Point C as the backdrop to announce the Energy Security Strategy underlines the importance this project plays and the role of nuclear within the strategy, particularly as the only current nuclear facility being built.

South West companies interested in accessing contracts at Hinkley Point C can take advantage of specialist skill interventions and a bespoke supply chain service. The region has already seen billions of pounds of inward and outward investment and offers a template for future nuclear power sites as indicated in the recent strategy document. HPC also continues to offer opportunities for suppliers looking to invest in the region.

The Hinkley Supply Chain Team continue to receive live opportunities from contractors at Hinkley Point C, and although the project is moving into the next phase of construction with a focus on MEH (Mechanical, Electrical and H-VAC), this year alone they have seen work packages ranging from lab facilities and specialist coatings to large scale mechanical electrical installation works.

The impact that Hinkley Point C has had on the industry for the South West is this month detailed in the recently released 2022 Socio-economic report, which can be read below. To read our full response to the Energy Security Strategy release, visit our website.
